Resident Bruce Vanicek wants people to know about Thimerosal, an ingredient used in flu vaccines.
"Thimerosal is 49.6 percent ethylmercury and is used as a sterilizing agent in the flu vaccine," Vanicek said. "The health authorities call it a preservative. It preserves nothing. It only serves to kill anything it comes in contact with such as bacteria and viruses before and after it is injected into people."
To spread this information to residents, Vanicek has recently erected four signs along East Main Road, across the street from the Green Grocer and Anna D's Cafe.
The signs warn residents about this ingredient in flu shot vaccines. According to local residents, the signs are posted each year and are "nothing new," said Elizabeth Pedro, a candidate for Town Council.
"The flu shot can be made in single dosages which eliminates the need for the mercury," Vanicek continued. "Problem is that it costs about $3.50 more per dose to do that."
The signs were posted within the past week. The Portsmouth School Department is scheduled to begin hosting flu shot clinics for students this month.
Parents must sign a consent form for the flu shot to be given to their child. For a schedule of the flu clinics, visit here.
The four signs read: "Flu shots contain Thimerosal," "Thimerosal contains mercury," "Demand mercury free vaccines!" and "For info contact safeminds.org."
The Coalition for SafeMinds is a non-profit organization founded, according to their Web site, "to restore health and protect future generations by eradicating the devastation of autism and associated health disorders induced by mercury and other man-made toxicants."
According to SafeMinds, "the autism epidemic that began in the late 1980's is likely due primarily to toxins adversely affecting fetus and infants during development. Mercury is likely a major contributor to this toxin-induced autism, whether the source of the mercury is from vaccines or environmental mercury exposure."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Web site, "recent estimates from CDC's Autism Developmental Disabilities Monitoring network found that about 1 in 150 children have ASD (autism spectrum disorders).
"This estimate is higher than estimates from the early 1990s. Some people believe increased exposure to thimerosal (from the addition of important new vaccines recommended for children) explains the higher prevalence in recent years.
"However, evidence from several studies examining trends in vaccine use and changes in autism frequency does not support such an association. Furthermore, a scientific review by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that 'the evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship between thimerosal-containing vaccines an autism.' CDC supports the IOM conclusion."
