AFTER five cycles of IVF and years trying to start a family, baby Jayden was a "miracle child" to his parents Ty and Cyndi Lynch.
But within weeks of his third birthday and just a week before Christmas, the active, happy toddler was dead.
He had been entrusted to a registered home-child care worker in Yamba.
An inquest due to begin this week will explore just how and why Jayden died, and in particular why WorkCover have never investigated the death.
"We want to know how a child can lose their life while at daycare," the couple said yesterday.
"Jayden's death has destroyed us, and we want changes made to ensure it never happens again."
Deputy State Coroner Scott Mitchell will oversee the inquiry into Jayden's death on December 15, 2008, at Maclean hospital.
Born without any health issues, at about six months old Jayden experienced his first seizure shortly after his immunisation shots. But before his death doctors said Jayden had outgrown the condition and were about to begin a program of weaning him off his medication.
"Jayden was an active, vibrant, affectionate child who instantly made others smile," Mr Lynch said.
"We are hoping this inquest will provide some answers.
"All parents who put children in care expect they will be supervised safely."
The couple has pushed for an inquest or WorkCover investigation, sending letters to Premier Kristina Keneally and Police Minister Michael Daly.
"It shouldn't take 21 months after a child has passed away for Workcover to get involved," Mrs Lynch said.
It is understood Jayden's carer has not been sanctioned and continues to care for children in the area. She is not accused of any wrong-doing.
The inquest begins in Grafton Local Court on Wednesday.
