The global swine flu pandemic alert has been lifted. World Health Organisation director-general Margaret Chan said on Tuesday the H1N1 pandemic has largely run its course but warned: “This does not mean it has gone away. While the level of concern is now greatly diminished, vigilance remains important.”

In Nairobi, the director of public health, Dr Shanaz Sharif said while the WHO declaration was welcome, Kenya would not relax its vigilance. “We still have to monitor our activities just as before,” he said.

The virus started in Mexico in April 2009 and on June 11 the same year, the World Health Organisation officially declared it a global pandemic.

Kenya confirmed its first case on June 29. The country went on to report more than 800 suspected cases after the first one, involving a British university student who was in a group of 34 on an educational tour, was diagnosed in Kisumu.

Polio
This is one disease for which vaccination nearly always gets the credit for its removal. In 1952, according to the NNII, 21,000 people had polio in the U.S. In 2002, polio was non-existent here. What is missing here is the fact that when the vaccine was introduced in 1947, it actually caused polio rather than "cured" it and when the new version in 1952 was released, polio was already on its way out. Mostly thanks to changes in diagnosis and treatment.⁵

Polio was the first major public health "crisis" in America and major propaganda campaigns were waged to alert people to its danger. This despite the fact that such a tiny percentage of the population was susceptible to or infected with the disease.

As ridiculous as it seems, retailers across the U.S. are already stocking their stores with Christmas goods. It's all about the big commercial push, of course, since retailers make about 50 percent of their profits during the Christmas season.

Similarly, flu vaccine manufacturers generate huge profits during the Christmas season, too, and they've already begun shipping this year's winter season flu vaccines to U.S. pharmacies and hospitals. Never mind the fact that the actual flu strain in the vaccine is little more than a hodgepodge collection of last year's flu strains. Each year's flu vaccines are technically only applicable to last year's flu season, making them perfect for time travelers but useless for everybody else.

Along with the big vaccine push comes the inevitable vaccine propaganda. It's all so predictable: First there's the announcement that "everybody should get vaccinated." This is followed by some later announcement in the pre-Christmas season of "how bad" this year's flu season is getting. This is followed yet again by another urgent bulletin by health authorities urging everyone to get vaccinated.
