Gates Steers Clear of HPV Vaccine Row

Bill Gates, co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on Friday denied knowledge of the controversy over alleged violations of ethics during clinical trials of HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine conducted by a U.S.-based non-governmental organisation for a pharmaceutical company.

Bill and Melinda Gates had funded PATH, that conducted the ‘trial for a pharmaceutical company in the backwards districts of Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) that had approved the clinical trials asked the State governments to stop any further trials after the matter was brought to their notice.

During a special meeting of the FDA Vaccines & Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) held May 7th to discuss new information on contamination of rotavirus vaccines with DNA from two pig viruses, the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) called for the FDA to raise legal vaccine safety testing and labeling standards.

“The contamination of rotavirus vaccines with animal virus DNA that was not detected pre or post-licensure is an important wake up call for industry and government,” said NVIC Co-Founder and President Barbara Loe Fisher. ”Parents being told by federal officials to give their babies Rotarix and RotaTeq vaccine expect those vaccines and others to be free from adventitious agent contamination.”

NVIC called on the FDA to legally require vaccine manufacturers to adhere to binding regulations rather than offering companies non-binding recommendations and to immediately:

THE NATIONAL cervical cancer vaccination programme will begin on Monday week and will have started in 21 second-level schools before they take their summer holidays, the Health Service Executive has confirmed.

The start of the programme on May 17th when schools have just two weeks to go before they break for the summer, is an attempt to fulfil Minister for Health Mary Harney’s commitment to start the programme among first-year students in the current school year.

Fine Gael spokesman on health Dr James Reilly welcomed the announcement but said “that the piecemeal nature of the implementation is a cause for concern”.

FDA Recommends US Allow Use of Rotavirus Vaccines While Safety Being Studied

A Food and Drug Administration panel said Friday fragments of pig viruses found in vaccines used to protect infants against rotavirus didn't appear to cause health risks.

While the panel didn't take a vote on the products, several members of the agency's vaccine panel said the vaccines -- Merck & Co.'s (MRK) Rotateq and GlaxoSmithKline PLC's (GSK, GSK.LN) Rotarix -- should remain on the U.S. market while additional studies are conducted about the impact of pig viruses.

In the meantime, the panel said parents who are considering whether to vaccinate their infants need to be informed about the findings.

UK: Still Counting the Cost of Swine Flu Scare

HEALTH chiefs spent more than £2m in the North East on the swine flu scare, figures released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal.

A survey of 107 Primary Care Trusts in England highlights the cost of responding to swine flu was £340,000 on average for every trust.

But in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland the cost in 2009/10 was higher than the national average, with £600,000 being spent by each PCT.

Meanwhile in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland the costs ran to £266,667 for each trust.

In total £2,600,001 was spent on battling the pandemic which cost 16 lives in the North East and 298 nationally – normal flu costs the lives of more than 1,000 people each year.

The money was invested in anti-viral collection points, storage and distribution of anti-virals and vaccines, additional equipment, staff training and public awareness campaigns.

Health bosses last night insisted no trust in the region would have to scale-back their services in order to accommodate the significant amount spent. Martin Wilson, of NHS North East said: “Resources for pandemic flu are allocated as part of NHS ongoing emergency planning arrangements.

Australia: Parents Criticise Government For Not Acting Sooner

Parents have heavily criticized the Western Australian government for not acting sooner, after the flu vaccine caused hundreds of children to suffer convulsions and vomiting. One angry parent told the Australian that all three of her children were taken to hospital suffering from vomiting and fits after the vaccine saying that it was 'a frightening experience'.

It later emerged however, that this vaccine, which was a combination of the seasonal flu and the swine flu vaccine was never actually tested. Australian reported:-

"Peter Richmond, associate professor at the University of Western Australia's school of pediatrics and child health, said the vaccine was not subjected to trials."

The West Australian government has launched an inquiry into the flu vaccinations that caused adverse reactions in hundreds of children across the nation.

WA Health Minister Kim Hames said the inquiry would scrutinise systems used to identify public health risks, including vaccine side-effects and disease outbreaks, after criticism of the government's slow response.

Last month, seasonal flu shots caused adverse reactions in 251 children under five in WA, with 55 suffering convulsions and 196 suffering fevers and vomiting.
