India’s H1N1 death count 6 short of 1200

New Delhi, January 25 -- The severity of the disease related to the H1N1 virus in India shows no signs of receding with ten more people reported having succumbed to the influenza Monday.
 
With the new fatalities, the death toll in the country touched 1194, just six short of the 1,200 mark.

Official sources reported seven swine flu deaths Monday with three from Gujarat alone, while one casualty each happened in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh respectively.

Additionally, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare today confirmed reports of another three deaths that had occurred earlier. These included two in Gujarat and one in Delhi.

H1N1 status in the national capital
According to health officials, with two more people falling prey to the viral disease, the number of deaths in the national capital touched 92. One of the victims was a young woman, while no details of the second casualty were available.

“A 33-year-old woman died at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital,” said Anjana Prakash, deputy nodal officer in charge of swine flu control in Delhi.

Meanwhile, two fresh cases of swine flu surfaced in Delhi taking the cumulative number of infections in the city so far to 9,636.

H1N1 related deaths across the nation
Currently the highest number of deaths from individual states stands at 311 in Maharashtra, followed by Gujarat that accounts for 217 fatalities.

175 lives have been lost in Rajasthan, 141 in Karnataka, 52 in Andhra Pradesh, 38 in Punjab, 36 in Kerala, 33 in Haryana, 20 in Madhya Pradesh, 18 in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Uttarakhand, eight each in Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, seven in Tamil Nadu, and six each in Chhattisgarh and Puducherry,

In addition, five have succumbed to the virus in Goa, three in Orissa, two each in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir and one in Mizoram.

H1N1 infections across the states
To date, samples of 121806 persons have been tested for the Influenza both in government and private laboratories, with 23.4 percent of them testing positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, 36 new indigenous cases surfaced from various states. These included 14 in Maharashtra, nine in Gujarat, three in Uttar Pradesh, two each in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and one each in Karnataka, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan and Chandigarh.

WHO update on H1N1 worldwide
A weekly update by the world Health Organization (WHO) on Friday revealed that nearly 14,142 people have lost their lives by the pandemic worldwide since its outbreak in April, 2009.

The hardest hit is the U.S. where 7,094 persons died due to the virus, followed by Europe that reported 3,099 fatalities. Meanwhile, the Western Pacific, South-East Asia, East Mediterranean and African regions reported 1,511, 1,366, 941 and 131 deaths respectively.

However, the cumulative number of deaths may be underestimated, as many deaths are never tested or recognized as influenza related.

So far, the deadly virus has caused infections in more than 209 countries and overseas territories.
